  What is an Environmental Impact Statement?
 
An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is a document required of federal agencies by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for major projects or legislative proposals significantly affecting the environment. A tool for decision making, it describes the positive and negative effects of the undertaking and cites alternative actions. It provides an important opportunity for the public to learn about and comment on pending government decisions that may result in significant impacts to the environment.

 

  Where are we in the process?
 
On September 13, 2005, the Notice of Intent to Prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was published in the Federal Register.

October 5th and 6th, 2005 - Public Scoping meetings were held.

December 13th and 14th, 2005 - Public meetings were held to discuss proposed alternatives.

June 30th, 2006 - Draft EIS released for public review and comment.

July 26th and 27th, 2006 - Public hearings on the Draft EIS were held.

August 28, 2006 - The public review and comment period on the Draft EIS was completed.

October 2007 - Final EIS available for comment.

November 20, 2007 - The public review and comment period on the Final EIS was completed.
